What is the "Special Raffle Turning” All About?"
Each year twelve volunteers agree to donate to the club a piece of their best work for a given month. The only rule is that the piece should be within a 6” X 6” size. Even that is not hard and fast. The program allows club members the chance to collect really fine work from their fellow turners. After all, who appreciates good turning more than a fellow turner.

Bob Temple turned a beautiful wood vessel replicating his favorite Federal glassware style. It is fashioned from Ambrosia Maple, approximately 10 1/2" high by 4" wide. The height of the thin wall vessel presented a challenge which Bob resolved by building a special (inline rollerblade)steady rest to facilitate the deep hollowing. The elegant piece was finished with Mohawk gloss clear finish lacquer.

SPWA thanks Bob for his fine contribution and congratulates the lucky winner, new member, Bobby Layne.

Southern Piedmont Woodturners got to enjoy the special skill and ability of member, Dwight Hartsell in one of his exquisite hollow turned vessels with pyrographic etching. Dwight applies a certain amount of heat using a randomly applied template and then applies a lower heat and hash marking pattern to create the smaller effect between the larger patterns. All markings are overlaid onto a balanced pattern of Ambrosia Maple wood. The overall effect is a stunning 9" X 5" vessel which raffle winner, Russell Williamson, is happy to add to his collection. Thanks you for your offering, Dwight; congratulations, Russell.
