Hello all AAW Chapter Heads,
We would very much appreciate it if you could somehow post the information below to your members. Believe it or not, Maine is quite beautiful in the winter! And not at all crowded...

Many Thanks, Rebecca

Presidents Weekend
Special Workshop
Nested Natural Edge Bowls and Coring Workshop
Ralph Tursini

Feb 15 & 16, 2009

The Woodturning School in conjunction with the Maine Woodturners Chapter of the AAW in Damariscotta, ME is pleased to offer a very special Natural Edge Bowl Workshop featuring Ralph Tursini.

Ralph Tursini comes to us from Vermont where he is a full-time woodturner.  His work centers around green turned bowls and woodturning instruction. With his guidance, students will make a matched or nested pair of natural-edged bowls from a 10 -12 inch black cherry blank. The wood will be winter-harvested allowing for natural bark adhesion.  Most students will make a third bowl, natural-edged or conventional, their choice, pace permitting. Ralph will be bringing fresh-cut cherry from Vermont for these pieces.

In addition, coring will be explored and demonstrated. There will be hands-on coring opportunities for each student. This will be based on natural-edge forms, which require a little coring practice and finesse to master. Tursini is also skilled at and can answer questions about architectural and spindle turning.

This program is being offered in conjunction with the Maine Woodturners. Ralph will demonstrate green-wood turning and finishing techniques on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Maine Woodturners meeting at Erskine Academy and come to the Woodturning School in Damariscotta on Sunday and Monday, Feb 15 & 16, 2009. If you are interested or think you might be interested in “Natural Edge” Bowls, this is the course for you. And…remember the bark will adhere to the bowls.

The cost of the workshop at the Woodturning School is $565 including materials and will include personal instruction, all materials, breakfast pastries, lunch, snacks and beverages. To register, contact us the Woodturning School 207-563-2345 or rebecca@woodturningschool.org. Prerequisite: Intro 1 and 2 or their equivalent. The Demonstration at the Maine Woodturning Club costs $20 for members, $30 for non-members, and can be paid at time of the demo.

The Woodturning School, located in Damariscotta, ME offers beginning and intermediate woodturning students a chance to develop their skills in a consistent, safe, and friendly environment. The program has an educational curriculum that is based on a woodturning syllabus. Experienced and skilled teachers offer consistent, solid instruction. “All you have to do is sign up and show up” says Ken Keoughan, Director of the school. “We provide the Oneway 1640 lathes, the materials, the well sharpened tools and the quality instruction.” For more detailed information about us, see  http://www.woodturningschool.org/html  The website also includes a list of local accommodations, many of which offer discounts to Woodturning School students.
